Continuing our series on our faculty members who have been recently promoted, Kamran Khan was promoted to Professor as of July 1, 2019. Congratulations, Kamran!

The Department of Medicine is delighted to welcome Dr. Jennifer Watt, Dr. Alberto Goffi, Dr. Seema Marwaha and Dr. Yin Ge to the active medical staff at St. Michael’s.

Jackie Duffin’s book on the medical expedition to Easter Island, which she presented at Medical Grand Rounds last year, is now available on amazon.ca.

The Jeffrey C. Lozon Physician Leadership Award is given annually to a physician member of St. Michael’s Hospital who has demonstrated outstanding leadership skills in promoting the mission and vision of the hospital. Nominations will be accepted from any member of St. Michael’s, including both medical and non-medical staff. Self-nominations are also accepted. The nominator must provide their own letter of nomination and two supporting letters.

In Canada, one in ten patients currently admitted to hospital is suffering from a healthcare associated infection.  These infections are devastating to patients already struggling to cope with their illness, as they increase morbidity, mortality and length of stay.  If the infection is the result of a multidrug resistant bacterial pathogen, the outcomes are even worse.

You may remember some months ago I forwarded to you a plea from our colleague, Dr. Margaret Herridge for a liver donor for her husband, Dr. Rob Stewart, after he developed liver failure.  Many of you also know Rob as a colleague in the urology division at St. Mike’s.

Laura is joining the Department of Medicine as a clinician teacher and Lecturer in the Division of General Internal Medicine as of July 1, 2019.

I am pleased to announce that Dr. Najma Ahmed has agreed to accept the position of Interim Surgeon-In-Chief at St. Michael’s Hospital effective May 1, 2019.   Dr. Ahmed is an Associate Professor at the University of Toronto where she also serves as Vice-Chair of Education.  She has been a member of the Department of Surgery at St. Michael’s since 2001 when she was recruited to the Division of General Surgery. Her clinical focus is in the areas of Trauma and Acute Care Surgery. Please join me in welcoming Dr. Ahmed to this position and I ask that you give her your full support during this transition period.
